Tussey Mountain Moonshiners

Winners of the 2010 DelFest Bluegrass Band Competition, the Tussey Mountain Moonshiners hail from State College, PA, honoring the bluegrass traditions of the region. On stage they bring a captivating mix of traditional and unique, original songs, and a friendly connection with the audience. Bluegrass Unlimited said this about their debut album, I’m Going Home: “… the Tussey Mountain Moonshiners exude rich talent, enthusiasm, energy, and a wide knowledge of string music… Every single cut proves enjoyable ... With admirably equal skill, authenticity, and enthusiasm, the Tussey Mountain Moonshiners ... move from bluegrass to old-time to folk/Americana.”

Steve Buckalew

Stephen Buckalew
Steve was born with a fiddle in his hands.... which made childbirth very uncomfortable for his poor mother! Throughout his life, he also picked up the guitar and mandolin, bringing the same Buckalew magic to those instruments as well. Add his vocals to the mix and it's easy to see why he's the musical leader of the Moonshiners. Steve has played many types of music in many bands over the years, and that diversity clearly shows up in Moonshiner music. Steve grew up on Tussey Mountain, and he still lives practically right beside it. He loves the Central PA area, and so it was perfectly fitting to call the band Tussey Mountain Moonshiners.

Tussey Mountain Moonshiners - Gwen Stimely

Gwen Stimely
Gwen first started playing the banjo after seeing Bill Monroe years ago, but she was afraid to let anybody hear her. We’re so glad that she was having fun and didn’t give up, and eventually overcame that fear. Her unique playing style and wonderful vocals, along with her songwriting talent, are huge contributors to the Tussey Mountain Moonshiner’s success.

Paul Brigman - Tussey Mountain Moonshiners

Paul Brigman
Paul Brigman plays guitar and bass and also sings and composes. Paul has played bluegrass, folk, and other acoustic music professionally in the Central PA area for years. When he isn't picking those strings, he can be found backpacking, birding, and sharing his love of the outdoors with others at Penn State's Shaver's Creek Environment Center.
Marc Prave - Tussey Mountain Moonshiners

Marc "Lumber City Slim" Prave
Marc plays bass and guitar for the Moonshiners and also does a little singing. Marc is a multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter who plays a wide variety of music in multiple bands. He brings many years of frontman and sideman experience to the group and is "at home" working the crowd or hanging in the pocket. When he isn't playing music you can find him working his full time job as a Luthier, building and repairing instruments. When he isn't playing or building you'll find him brewing beer and drinking it.
Tussey Mountain Moonshiners - Greg Moore Greg Moore
If you hear Greg’s fiddle, it doesn’t take long to remember why it is you love bluegrass music, even if you’ve never heard bluegrass before! His playing comes straight from the well of pure bluegrass. He has played with Junior Sisk, James King, and many others, and we're proud to have him as a frequent guest of the Moonshiners. Greg is now mostly full-time fiddling with the wonderful bluegrass band Remington Ryde.
